On completion of his bespoke apprenticeship in 1968, 18-year-old Shener Adam immediately started taking commissions, designing for and quickly building up a clientele within a number of independent retail outlets across London. His designs soon became widely sought after and by the age of 19, he was supplying the likes of Lord John, Take 6 and John Stephen; three of the most popular shops of the 1960’s and 70’s.
By 1976 The Adam of London label was born and highly sought after by musicians, actors and footballers alike.
Yearning for a change, his career took him to the U.S.A where he started the successful company White on White Ltd and became menswear consultant to several companies on both sides of the Atlantic. Shener Adam is one of the few British designers and manufacturers to have maintained continuous success over this period. Realising a poor standard in affordable, ready to wear tailoring available to the British public, his return from the U.S. in September 1994 marked a conscious decision to creatively attack the British export market and produce expertly designed and tailored clothing for men. Shener Adam established Shener Adam Collections, and re-established Adam of London as a young diffusion line.
Nowadays Shener has taken a backseat from the retail side of the Company and passed down the reigns to his son Richie Adam, who has been in and amongst the business since the age of 13. In 2009 Richie became a Director of the Company bringing with him his long term friend, Jeremy Edwards, who had a wealth of experience in retail and fashion and is now the Shop Manager.
Over the last 8 years Shener has taken a very hands-on approach in passing on his old techniques and experience to the lads, in his words ‘the type of thing a fashion course won’t teach you, you have to live it.’
